The wonder of Tausug reduplicated words<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tausug is the lingua franca of Sulu. It is also known as Bahasa Sug and Sinug. Strictly speaking, Bahasa Sug is more appropriate to use since the word Bahasa<\/em> means \u201clanguage\u201d, and Sug<\/em> is the shortened version of Lupah Sug, the way the natives call their cherished homeland. But the natives of Sulu more often than not use Tausug to refer to themselves and their language, which is a member of the so-called Austronesian family of languages spoken by several hundreds of millions of people in Asia. It is also one of the major languages in Mindanao spoken in Basilan, Zamboanga, Tawi-Tawi, and the eastern part of Sabah where many Tausugs live.<\/p>\n

There are many colorful aspects about Tausug just like other Filipino languages. I would like to start with and focus on Tausug reduplicated words in this essay and reserve the rest to other writers or to future similar essays. Reduplicated words are those that are repeated at least twice without any elision or dropping of letters from the word being reduplicated. The original word being repeated has its own distinct meaning, and that\u2019s the wonder of it. \u00a0Once it\u2019s reduplicated forming a compound word, the meaning is changed, quite different from the original meaning as a single word. Bahasa Sug words, which can be reduplicated are those used in real-life situations. They could be names of animals, objects, plants, games, dances, illnesses, places, and even parts of the human body, etc. after reduplication.<\/p>\n

Allow me now to kick off our interchange of ideas with the names of animals as the ones to be reduplicated. Let\u2019s take the word gadja<\/em>. It means \u201celephant\u201d in English. And right away, the enormity of the elephant, its ivory tusks and elongated, flexible nose and\u00a0 \u00a0its seeming sluggishness owing to its size all flash in your mind and mine. But once you reduplicate the word gadja<\/em>, those vivid characteristics vanish in an instant. For the reduplicated gadja-gadja<\/em> is no longer an elephant but a kind of illness common among children medically known as \u201cmumps\u201d. \u00a0Another instance is when the word \u201cpig\u201d, which is babuy<\/em> in Tausug, is reduplicated into babuy-babuy<\/em>. It immediately refers now to a name of an illness called \u201cepilepsy\u201d. From an animal that runs, let\u2019s move to an animal that hops better known as ambak<\/em> or \u201cfrog\u201d. You reduplicate it into ambak-ambak<\/em>, and you produce a musical instrument called in English as \u201caccordion.\u201d From a harmless hopping animal, let\u2019s take a scary crawling creature called in Bahasa Sug as has<\/em>, which means \u201csnake\u201d <\/em>in English. Once it\u2019s reduplicated into has-has<\/em>, you can use it as a verb in Tausug as in the sentence Maghas-has in manga tau bang way na usaha <\/em>(People will suffer if they have no more work). An insect that eats up the wood materials of your house which goes by the name of anay<\/em> can be reduplicated to assume another meaning. The result of the reduplication, which is now anay-anay<\/em>, means \u201cslow\u201d in English. A similar case is the word hinang<\/em>, which is \u201cwork\u201d in English. It will have a meaning quite a far cry from its original when reduplicated. The result of the reduplication of the word in question will turn out to mean \u201cblack magic\u201d in its reduplicated form of hinang-hinang.<\/em><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s take an animal with wings like manuk<\/em>, which means \u201cchicken.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0 Although the word remains with a flying characteristic, it does make its flying element even more vivid because the moment manuk<\/em> is reduplicated into manuk-manuk<\/em>, the meaning is now \u201cbird\u201d. Speaking of birds, we can\u2019t afford not to mention itik<\/em>, which is \u201cduck\u201d in English. You reduplicate it, and the meaning changes easily into a kind of dance called itik-itik<\/em>. I also remember maya<\/em>, the bird I loved to watch when I was a kid as they flew in a flock and perched on the rice plantation of our neighbor. When you reduplicate the word maya<\/em>, the \u201cbird\u201d turns into a \u201cfish\u201d called maya-maya<\/em>, which is quite savory and expensive in Sulu. But here\u2019s more interesting; it\u2019s the case of kabug<\/em>, a flying mammal, which is asleep during the day and awake at night looking for food. When it is reduplicated, it becomes a game usually involving a child and someone older called kabug-kabug<\/em>, the purpose of which is to make the kid laugh by tickling him\/her on the side of the body or on the armpit. The older playmate raises his\/her hand, the fingers doing a flying motion. To tickle the child, the hand as a mock bird suddenly swoops down the child\u2019s armpit or any part of the body depending on the whim and caprice of the tickler, chanting \u201ckabug-kabug, kabug-kabug<\/em>\u201d. And the child bursts into peals of thunderous laughter. Birds and other creatures that fly, you know, excite our eyes and imagination because they come in different shapes and sizes.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s move forward and experience other dimensions of Tausug word reduplication. This time, let\u2019s take an animal in the sea, istah<\/em>, which is a generic term for \u201cfish\u201d. If istah<\/em> is reduplicated, it would mean an old children\u2019s game called in Tausug as istah-istah<\/em>. Let\u2019s have a specific kind of fish. You\u2019ll be amused when Suga<\/em> or \u201csun\u201d in English is reduplicated into suga-suga<\/em>. It\u2019s another fish which can tickle your appetite when it\u2019s grilled and dipped in a sauce made of kalamansi<\/em> juice seasoned with fresh hot pepper. So much for that. Let\u2019s now move to sug<\/em>, another interesting word which means \u201csea current\u201d in English. If you recall, it is from this word when the name Tausug as a people is believed to have originated. When this word is reduplicated into sug-sug<\/em>, it will produce two meanings: to \u201crecite\u201d or \u201cto trace family relations\u201d. Moving on, let\u2019s have a word having to do with gastronomy. The word kari<\/em> means \u201cto come\u201d in English but when you reduplicate it into kari-kari<\/em>, it would refer to a native dish, which is also mouth-watering in savor.<\/p>\n

Even some parts of the body could change their meanings from their previous denotations when they are reduplicated. \u00a0Let\u2019s buckle down back to work with the word buku<\/em> for you to see firsthand its transformation resulting from reduplication. This Tausug word means \u201cnoose in the rope when it\u2019s tightened\u201d. When you reduplicate it, you\u2019ll get a new meaning of the reduplicated buku-buku<\/em>, now referring to \u201cankle\u201d in English. \u00a0Still another word like duguh<\/em>, which means \u201cblood\u201d in English, could compound your wonderment about how it could transform itself into a sea product when it\u2019s reduplicated into duguh-duguh<\/em>. From being \u201cblood\u201d in meaning prior to reduplication, it is now a kind of \u201csea cucumber\u201d known as duguh-duguh<\/em> after reduplication.<\/p>\n

The word lungun<\/em> which means \u201cto arrange the rope in circle\u201d when used as a verb becomes \u201cintestines\u201d when reduplicated into lungun-lungun<\/em>. As for the \u201cmouth\u201d which is simud<\/em> in Tausug, the meaning of the reduplicated simud-simud<\/em> is related to it in the sense that its meaning \u201cto gossip\/backbite\u201d when used as a verb is one of its dirty functions. \u201cSalt\u201d for asin<\/em> in Tausug becomes blackheads when it\u2019s reduplicated into asin-asin<\/em>. The reduplicated anak-anak<\/em> means \u201csmall\u201d and anak <\/em>from which the reduplicated word comes means \u201cchild.\u201d The color \u201cred\u201d or pula <\/em>in Tausug has an interesting reduplication, which is pula-pula.<\/em> And guess what its meaning is\u2014\u201cinfant\u201d!<\/p>\n

The muezzin\u2019s call to prayer which is bang<\/em> in Tausug gets the meaning of \u201ccake\u201d when it is reduplicated into bang-bang<\/em>.\u00a0 Tabid<\/em> which means \u201cto squeeze\u201d in English when used as a verb in Tausug will likewise mean a \u201ckind of cake\u201d when it\u2019s reduplicated into tabid-tabid<\/em>. \u201cCassava\u201d is panggih<\/em> in Tausug, but when it\u2019s reduplicated into panggih-panggih<\/em>, it becomes a native Tausug \u201ccake made up of a fried confection of flour\u201d usually taken with coffee in several coffee shops at downtown Jolo. Similar in meaning to this is \u00a0gallang<\/em>, \u201cbracelet\u201d in English but once reduplicated, it will result in gallang-gallang<\/em>, another Tausug \u201cnative cake\u201d comparable to panggih-panggih<\/em>. The word tabuh<\/em> or \u201cmarket\u201d has a shade of meaning different from its usual denotation once it\u2019s reduplicated into tabuh-tabuh<\/em>. As it is in its reduplicated form, <\/em>it is no longer a \u201cplace where fish and similar food products are sold,\u201d but when tabuh<\/em> is reduplicated as \u00a0tabuh-tabuh<\/em>, the meaning shifts to a \u201cgambling place\u201d where cockfights and other gambling activities are held.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s proceed to some action words. Tukud<\/em> means \u201canswer\u201d in English, but when it is reduplicated, it becomes tukud-tukud<\/em> having the \u00a0meaning of a \u201criddle\u201d. In the rural areas of Sulu where Tausug traditions remain strong, there are illnesses attributed to an abat<\/em> triggered by a dead person and other spirits and can be considered as a disease etiology. When this is reduplicated into abat-abat<\/em>, it will mean a traditional recital that can drive the abat<\/em> away. The word kalu<\/em> or \u201cfight\u201d in English can also be reduplicated into kalu-kalu<\/em>, which means\u00a0 \u201cmaybe\u201d in English. Another one-syllable word sung<\/em> or \u201cgoing to\u201d or \u201cabout to\u201d in English can be reduplicated into sung-sung<\/em> which can be translated into a \u201cclogged nose\u201d. Kalu-kalu<\/em> which means \u201cmaybe\/probably\u201d in English comes from the Tausug word kalu<\/em> meaning \u201cfight\u201d.<\/p>\n

Another Tausug word landang<\/em>, which is made up of nipa<\/em> starch as one of the ingredients in preparing siyuruh <\/em>or ginataan<\/em> in Filipino when reduplicated yields the word landang-landang<\/em>, <\/strong>which means \u201cto fry\u201d. \u00a0On the other hand, \u201cfirecrackers\u201d in general are called timbak-timbak<\/em> which \u00a0<\/strong>comes from timbak<\/em>\u00a0 for \u201cgunfire\u201d in English. Another one is tug<\/em> meaning \u201cto sleep\u201d, but when this word is reduplicated, it takes the meaning of \u201cdroplet\u201d. For \u201cvapor\u201d or \u201cmouth sore\u201d, the apt Tausug word for this is singaw<\/em>, but it\u00a0 would mean \u201cweird\u201d in English when it is reduplicated into singaw-singaw<\/em>. Let\u2019s close our discussion with another Tausug word which could also be reduplicated. This is the word jaga<\/em>, which is the equivalent of \u201cguard\u201d in English. When you reduplicate this word, it\u2019ll end up being jaga-jaga<\/em>, which means the \u00a0\u201cpropeller\u201d of an airplane. It is hoped that these reduplicated words in Tausug could propel us to discover more wonders in other languages, particularly those in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao or BARMM.<\/p>\n

There are Tausug words, however, that look and sound like reduplicated words but they aren\u2019t.\u00a0 Take the following, for example:<\/p>\n

They make this native tongue more colorful and amusing. As a living language, Bahasa Sug will continue to grow and expand its number of speakers all over our country. It\u2019ll continue to take pride on its uniqueness and enrich the cultural identity of its native speakers, confirming once again the diverse fabric of the BARRM as a region in particular and our country in general as the bedrock of national solidarity.<\/p>\n

Calbi Asain, PhD<\/strong> is a retired professor and former dean of the College of Arts and Sciences at the Mindanao State University-Sulu (MSU-Sulu). He is a graduate of AB English, summa cum laude, from the Notre of Jolo College; MA English from UP Diliman; and Ph.D. in Philippine Studies with specializations in anthropology, history, and Philippine literature from the College of Social Sciences and Philosophy (CSSP) also from UP Diliman. He writes short stories, poems, dramas in Bahasa Sug and English. His short stories in English were published in Focus Philippines<\/em>, Weekly Graphic<\/em>, National Midweek<\/em>, CCP Ani<\/em>, NCCA Mantala<\/em>, Mindanao Life<\/em>, Aday<\/em>, Mindanao Harvest,<\/em> and Moorings<\/em>. His first collection of short stories entitled Panunggud and Other Stories <\/em>was published by the De La Salle University Press in 2001. his essays and other articles on Muslim Filipino history, culture, and literature have appeared in The Filipino Teacher<\/em>, Coop Forum<\/em>, Focus Philippines<\/em>, WRIT.HOP: new writers speak up<\/em>, Selected Papers from Philippine-Spanish Friendship Day Conference, Inquirer Mindanao<\/em>, and The Journal of History<\/em>.<\/p>\n

He was a fellow of UP Diliman Summer Writers\u2019 Workshop, UP Mindanao Summer Writers\u2019 Workshop, MSU Iligan National Writers\u2019 Workshop, Silliman National Writers\u2019 Workshop, and NCCA-WMSU Regional Writers\u2019 Workshop.
