\n<\/strong>At The Repair Shop
\n<\/strong>

“Ma’am, how can I help you?”<\/p>\n

“Do you have a fix for worn-out nerves?
\nCan you glue together a broken heart?
\nMaybe a new coat of paint for faded loyalty?
\nOr perhaps a replacement for failed expectations?”<\/p>\n

“Madam, I am sorry but there are things that another’s tools will never fix!”<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Laundry<\/strong><\/p>\n

A weekly benediction awaits
\nThe clothes of one’s existence.
\nSeams, sleeves, cuffs, collars, pockets, hems,
\nColoreds and whites
\nSubjected to routine
\nPurification from the impurities inflicted by a life lived.
\nInto the wash they go—
\nA soul’s armor subjected to a cleanse,
\nWrought by suds of love and self-care.
\nA scrubbing to dissipate the stubborn stains of one’s frailties,
\nA thorough rinse to reaffirm the strengths.
\nHung to dry in the sun’s golden blessing and the air’s gentle whispers,
\nThen ironed, folded
\nAnd worn anew.<\/p>\n

Impermanence<\/strong><\/p>\n

To wish
\nThat things stay the same
\nIs useless.
\nThe world is a whirlpool of change.
\nThe universe relentlessly rules
\nOne must weather
\nThe struggle within and without,
\nTo resist the urge to remain in the comfort
\nOf the soul’s shell,
\nTo swim against the unwavering current,
\nTo reach one\u2019s destined shore.<\/p>\n

Jahara A. Solaiman<\/strong>\u00a0is an instructor at the English Department of Mindanao State University-Marawi City, where she teaches English, literature, and art appreciation. Her earlier works have appeared in other literary anthologies, the most recent being Lawanen II<\/em> (Gantala Press) and Ani 40: Katutubo <\/em>(Cultural Center of the Philippines). In addition to creative writing, she loves imparting her love of art (she works with colored pencils, watercolors, and acrylic) to her students.<\/p>\n
