Laitan
mislang sobangan
ma kapu’an bihing timbang
sahaya bulawan kalangitan
aminta bangkal ma bilu ayan
hamiyu baliyu balat-daya
pajiyara pasiyum ma papa
maglimbay janggay saloka’
Laitan
Daybreak comes
On the island on the edge of the ocean
The golden rays in the skies
Paints orange in the blue space
The gusting of the offshore winds
gently kissing the cheeks
the coconuts swing their arms
in the garden of eternity
Seven colors marked by the rainbow in the clouds
The sun glances and looks at Manisan
The sparkle of a thousand stars on the surface of the sea
The high sand calls out now to cleanse
On the coast of Laitan…

Tarasul Sama Tabawan
Starting this poem with “In the name of Allah”,
In the name of the one and only most powerful God;
All praises, honor and glory,
Only due to Allah first and foremost.;
This poem is made known to all of you,
To inform, advise and illuminate;
About the history of a Blessed Cove,
A place with a sacred pact with the Ira’an people.
Reverence to the way of the ancestors,
This is one value that identifies us;
You cannot be named people of Tabawan,
If this is not even part of your emotions.
From the very beginning when our ancestors landed,
Until they stick the poles of the oldest mosque and the longhouse;
The Pagjamu, Pagkamboan and Pagduwata,
Are the sacred obligations that we should fulfill.
The spirits’ appeasement in the land and plains,
Which is the Pampang log roller ritual offering;
Named also as the Crystal Glass Garden,
Must be always evoked and practiced.
The spirits’ appeasement in the Laitan shoreland,
Named also as the Garden of Eternity;
There lies the log roller and the ancestors’ swing,
Ancient markers symbolizing their playground.
The spirits’ appeasement in the Bohe’ Deya must be observed,
Named as the Fair Maiden Princess from heaven;
A sacred well, a communal heirloom well,
Its water strengthens bodies, bones and blood.
The Pagjamu rites lasts for three days and nights,
The music making in daylight and evenings doesn’t stop;
The dancing of maidens and elders take turns,
The spear dance and martial dance are exciting to look at.
If the kettle gongs are stricken and the drum beats;
The pounding of the gongs and the sound layer of the sulembat with bab’ndil plays along;
The ensemble musicians are quickened, then they play with all their might and faster!
The sound calls out to the community through the music-making of Tabawan ensemble.
The music-making summons the shamans and spirits-bearers,
Enjoining the women and community elders to witness;
In the rites, the spirits of the ancestors and the departed will manifest,
And those who have inherited family traditions dance in trance and speak in tongues.
Speardancing for men and the traditional dancing for women,
Different types of dances come out in the spirit houses;
Fan dance, turtle dance, sea mantis dance and ancient dance,
Arms swinging as if in a tipping boat when dancing the Igal Tabawan.
Igal Tabawan is also danced at weddings in the community,
This tradition has been observed since time immemorial;
Ever since as small children, they dance with the tapping of the hands of their parents,
They are made to dance in the open platform of the sea village especially when it’s full moon.
The full moon shines brightly in the heavens, in the skies,
It looks suspended but sometimes it is not, beyond outer space;
If we stare at it, it brings memories of our dear ones, our loved ones, our princess,
One can hear the soft voice of Oto’ singing leleng on the bridge blown by the breeze.
Many things happen when the moon is full and bright,
The elders weave their mats and sleep on the open porch at night;
Young men and maidens court each other by sailing on boats,
Paddling through the village sea channels, “Tabawan Night” is what it is known for.
My poem rests and ends here my brethren,
The imageries of the Sama people of Tabawan are shown to all of you;
A land from the eye of the east, an ordained place, a blessed place;
An ancestral place, a place of pilgrimage, the one and only Tabawan.
Even if in the most unlikely place anywhere in this wide world we might meet,
Even if we have a multitude of children, grandchildren and descendants;
Let us not forget our place’s traditions that our ancestors labeled as “the navel of the world”,
Wishing you all good tidings, peaceful prayers and love be with you always.
